Although The Wed Page was never officially launched under that name, as the day-to-day didn't allow me to develop it, we successfully tested the concept. Everyone in my inner circle (and the guests at our wedding) understood and loved it.
It's important to mention that I know this was a true opportunity that I didn't follow through on. I really don't blame the day-to-day; I know I procrastinated. I am responsible and accountable for this idea not evolving into a true service and a successful business.
Now, let me explain what it was:
It's your wedding, and you've been living with your partner for some time now. Or maybe you are moving to a new town, which makes having a registry tough, as you may already have one or two blenders, one or two beds, etc., or maybe you are moving and don't want to get all these gifts and then pay for them to be moved.
I was in this situation; in our case, we needed the gifts/stuff and wanted to avoid asking for cash (also, knowing that the guests would consider spending more on a gift than when they give you money).
The concept was straightforward. As a couple, you create your registry on a website. Still, instead of you getting the actual item, you would get the money deposited in your account so you could later buy the item (or something else).
The site also allowed you to see a countdown, pictures, videos, and communication about the wedding. The site is still up, thank you to a cousin who is the host, and you can find it here.
Today, this site feels a bit dated, and it is, as we haven't updated it since 2009. There is now a lot of competition that is very similar to this. They are now offering experiences as well, in combination with splitting the cost for any pricey items/experiences. They also offer a lot more real-time communication, reservation controls, etc., but again, please refer to this concept and think 12 years ago.
As mentioned, this idea lasted for a single event, my wedding, but the concept was a winner.
** It's worth pointing out that this idea was not the first that we developed; there was another at least one before, but this was the first time I started planning on creating a company under JLR2, and although it took a few years more, this was the seed, and that is why I have decided to include it here as it generated a lot of insights and learning that I have been able to use in my day to day. **
